The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:
legal and organisation requirements relating to sewage systems work, including:organisation standards, policies and procedures, including:infection controlmanual handlingpersonal protective equipmentimmunisation requirements and/or recommendationsscope of own role and responsibilitiesapprovals required and process of obtaining approvalsreferral agencies and procedureshousehold plumbing design and fixtures and the way in which effluent and sullage waste leaves the house or building to go out to the waste disposal system water and sewerage plans for the community, if availabletype, design and components of the sewage system in the community and how they function, including:septic or onsite systemssewage or effluent systemswhat sewage is and the difference between effluent (black) and sullage (grey) watercauses of common faults, risks and problems associated with household plumbing and sewage systems and how to identify and prevent themsewerage disposal strategies for communities or outstations without a sewerage disposal system (onsite and/or septic system or sewerage and/or effluent system), including knowledge of grease trap and soakage pit, pit toilets and shallow trench latrines.
